Wrap-around Family Support System:

The Family Support System includes deploying Family Support Workers to maintain regular communication with parents, facilitate open channels between Family Workers, parents, and teachers, promote awareness, and encourage participation in community activities. This fosters a sense of belonging through child bonding sessions and creating a supportive space for sharing experiences.

Project Launch:

November 2022, supported by the Royal Court Theatre.

First Phase:

Ran for 20 weeks.

Second Phase:

Started on 24/01/2023 at AUGB London, home to St Mary’s Ukrainian School, running for 26 weeks, twice a week, totalling 46 sessions, excluding British and Ukrainian holidays.

Support Sessions:​

Free Space offers a range of support sessions twice a week, including Elementary English, Conversational English, Embroidery, Art Class, and occasional creative sessions like decorating pysanky and personalizing mugs. Specialized seminars cover job finding, social support, and understanding the UK education system. Consultations for Ukrainians on various subjects are also provided.

Elementary English:

  • The group is very popular, with up to 30 daily registrations.
  •  Bi-lingual teacher presenting grammar in an easy-to-understand manner.
  • Demographics: Predominantly women on UC or retired.
  • Attendance: Total overall attendees: 179, regular visitors: 60

Embroidery:

  • Interest: Attracts both skilled embroideresses and novices eager to learn.
  • Projects: Includes a "Map of Ukraine" cross-stitch project and embroidery for Ukrainian defenders.
  • Attendance: Total attendees: 161, regular visitors: 45

Conversational English:

  • Format: Transitioned from free talk to structured conversational English with grammar and dialogue.
  • Topics: Job applications, CV writing, housing, transport, education, small talk, and
    emotional vocabulary.
  • Attendance: Total classes: 41, total attendees: 86, regular visitors: 35

Art Classes:

  • Therapeutic Effect: Classes cover both Ukrainian and world art, promoting relaxation and contentment.
  • Artists Studied: Ukrainian artists like Maria Pryimachenko and world-renowned artists
    like Vincent Van Gogh.
  • Attendance: Total attendees: 161, regular visitors: 45, average present: 25

Consultancy Services:

  • Aim: Support temporarily displaced Ukrainians in the UK, offering twice-weekly sessions and phone consultations.
  • Assistance Areas: Local authorities contact, BRP and NI applications, medical advice, social support, school advice, job search, ESOL courses, further education, and understanding the British system.
  • Demand: High demand with a 1:1 ratio of new requests and returning guests.
